1st & 2nd Grade Classroom
June 5
We hope everyone has a happy and safe summer! See you in the fall!
Week of May 31-June 4
Last week was the last week we will be together as the 1st and 2nd grade class! Katy and Kelly treated us to lunch at McDonald’s and then we went on a roller skating trip since we worked so hard all year. We had a great time playing games and falling down a few times. We all have a bruise or two, especially Katy and Kelly!
Nicole came in on Thursday to talk to us about forgiving others and how to keep safe during the summer. Friday we had a party for Peggy, our class nurse who will not be returning next year. We will all miss her very much!
Next weeks activities:
Tuesday morning- Kindergarten graduation
Tuesday evening- 5th and 8th grade graduation
Wednesday- school party at Apex
Thursday morning- school good-bye party
Week of May 24-28
Wow, last week was really busy! We kicked off the week by going to the Denver Zoo on Monday. We enjoyed seeing the monkeys most of all. On Wednesday we got to catch the bus to the Children’s Museum downtown where we played in their different centers and learned from their cool hands-on activities. Then, on Friday we walked to the neighborhood park with the whole school and cheered on the Middle School as they played kickball against the staff as part of a reward for reading.
We can’t believe that this week is the last week of classes and then we have all our end-of-the-year activities!

Last week we had a full week of classes, though some of them were interrupted due to the end of the year assessments we are starting. We will be assessed in the 3 core classes (reading, writing, math) along with ASL and any other appropriate tests. Nicole came in on Wednesday to work with us on picking on people and being polite. We have been working on this most of the year but sometimes need some additional reminders. We also filled up our marble containers and earned 30 minutes of free time.
We have 2 field trips scheduled for this week, so parents please send in your child’s signed permission slips!

Last week we had a field trip to Aurora High School to the Deaf and hard of Hearing Track and Field Day! We had so much fun participating in all the different events! We saw some friends from home and other schools and we even got our faces painted! Below there’s a video of the dash event.
On Wednesday, Nicole came in to talk to us about getting revenge on those who are picking on us. We learned that it is important to tell teachers or adults when someone is picking on us so that we don’t get in trouble ourselves! On Friday, we had an exciting day. First, we earned 30 minutes of free time and playing in class until lunch, Then, after lunch we met Luke Adams who was the first Deaf contestant on the tv show “The Amazing Race”. He told us all about his adventures and struggles as he races around the world with his mother. Then, we went to the Godlen Rec center to watch the teachers play volleyball against the Middle School team! It was funny to watch them play!

Last week we focused a lot of energy on getting ready for the Science Fair. Both groups had been working hard on an experiment with Katy. One group worked on comparing growth rates of red vs. white potatoes, while the other group researched habitats for crickets. Both groups made display boards and decorated a table to show all their hard work on Wednesday. We put ours out and then toured the Middle School students’ projects and saw some cool experiments. Some of us came on Wednesday night to the Art and Science show and proudly showed our projects to our parents.
Thursday morning we spent most of our time in an assembly watching the Middle School students compete in an ASL poetry contest. Sierra and Kara wanted to participate and Sierra made it to the top 8! Those top 8 were then filmed on Friday morning and their movie was shown in an art showcase in downtown Denver.
Our homework for next week is:
