American Sign Language (ASL) Class for Parents & Family Members

There will be 30-week sessions of ASL class offered this fall and spring at RMDS - at no charge!

Come and learn about American Sign Language, Deaf Culture, and more. These are vital tools which you may learn how to use and communicate successfully with your child/children at school and at home.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide manual fluency in American Sign Language including an appreciation for ASL grammar and the culture of the American Deaf community. Emphasis is placed on signing various structures of ASL, conversations, facial creative expressions, and sentence structure. You will develop receptive and expressive skills in the context of simple conversations and participation.

COURSE GOALS:
Developing beginning and intermediate level comprehension and expression in American Sign Language in order to function in social and family-related contexts.

Gaining knowledge about the linguistic structure of ASL, Deaf Culture, the Deaf Community, various perspectives on deafness, and the value of ASL in Deaf culture.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Encouraged to signs without voice in classroom.

Demonstrate comprehension of questions and statements including short narratives within conversational interaction.

Demonstrate ability to appropriately use ASL grammatical structures.

Demonstrate culturally appropriate communication behaviors.

Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate use of ASL in participants’ own family situations at home.


 

Deaf Community Events

The best way to practice your ASL signing skills is to mingle and meet with other deaf people - other than your ASL teacher. Following is the list of events within the Deaf community.
