Happy May!  Wow, I can’t believe that we have gotten some snow in May.  Ain’t it so beautiful?

A lot of things have happened past few weeks with me being gone to the ECE Summit conference at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.

The students are excited about the Garden/Plants unit and we will talk about ZOO animals too.  We all will be going on a field trip next Monday to the Denver Zoo.

April 6-9:

Happy Spring!  Spring means being outdoors, jumping high, enjoying the weather, occasional showers, buds swelling into flowers and animals come out of their hibernation.  Welcome back after a long week of spring break.  We sure need that to be able to recuperate fully for the next two months of school.

Here are some activities you can do indoors or outdoors.

-Carrot tops! Cut the tops (large ends) of carrots off- about 1″. Put the flat side into a small bowl of water, filled to 1/4″ level. Watch! In one or two weeks, you will see greenery shooting from the tops.

-Spring spelling.  Think of 10 words that have to do with spring, such as basket, showers, grow, insects, blooms, flower, etc.  Write them down and practice spelling them.

-On a rainy day try this.  Get some colored chalk and draw a design on a piece of whtie paper.  Put the paper outside and watch what happens to the patterns on the picture made by the rain.  Be sure to hold down your paper using rocks, so that it doesn’t blow away.

In next two weeks, we will talk about rainforest, plants and  insects.

March 1-5:

Happy March! I can’t believe that it’s already March and its just like the blink of an eye.  We only have 19 more days to say HELLO to Spring.  Enjoy Winter while it lasts.

The students really enjoyed learning more about the Community Helpers such as Dentist, Postal Office workers, and etc.  I am currently working on setting up a community helper field trip on March 9th.  On March 4th, we will be walking to Papa John’s to learn about the pizza makers and they will allow the students to make their own pizza.  Awesome!  Please keep an eye on the field trip form and it’s a walking distance for us since Papa John’s our neighbor.

This week we will be studying about DINOSAURS.  I know that the students will be very thrilled about this.  They really find the dinosaurs very fascinating.  If you have some stuff on dinosaurs that you would like to share, do let me know.

I thought it’d be neat to share with you about our two teachers.

Last two Fridays Melissa Peterson and Stephanie Carson attended a phenomenal workshop about improving students’ memory skills (Memory Improvement in Children with Learning and Developmental Disorders by Joel Alexander Ph.D.).  They gained a lot of new information.

There are simple things we can all do to improve our memory skills:

1.) Having a regular bedtime.

2.) Be outside for 1-2 hours between the hours of 3 and 5 PM.

3.) Reduce your light exposure 1 hour before bedtime-this means no computer and no TV.

4.) Turn on the lights when you wake up-bright lights help!

5.) Good nutrition

6.) Exercise
